Great Horned Chicken Killer.mpg

Charles was first out to the barn this morning.  I was getting ready to go out to milk the goats when he came running back in to grab his movie camera.  An owl had killed a chicken right next to the barn, and it was still there, with him filming it, when I arrived on the scene.

He got some fantastic footage.  To see it, check out Great Horned Chicken Killer on YouTube.

  1. Wow! What a great clip & to be able to see a Great Horned Owl so close (sorry about the chicken though, I just lost one to a hawk two days ago).

I've never interrupted an owl feeding, but I wonder why this one was unwilling to give up his quarry when there were obvious threats (dogs, lady with a big stick) to it. Stubborn or really, really hungry???

  2. OMG, I'd freak out! Especially over my chicken being killed like that. We have owls around us and late at night hear the scream of some unfortunate victim, then a pause, then the "hoot hoot" of the owl. I don't know what kind we have here though.

  3. That's amazing! It's too bad for your chicken, but I love seeing wildlife in it's natural habitat. That being said, I wasn't too impressed last summer when a wild mink came and destroyed half our chicken flock.

  6. That was some pretty good footage. I imagine he was just hungry and didn't want to leave his prey behind. I think I would have just left it alone and let him eat since the chicken was already a goner and apparently too heavy for him to fly with it. But the bad thing there would be saying it was a freebie meal and he might come back for more. What I found odd though was that it was daylight when the owl had the chicken. I thought they were night time hunters. He must have really been hungry to hunt in the day time.

  7. WOW. I can't believe that between you guys poking and yelling at it, and the dogs harassing it, that owl just would. not. leave!
